The day my baby stopped breathing.

You read that right, stopped breathing. A month and a day old. Stopped breathing. And I think I did too..

It all started on Saturday, it was a weird day. My baby was spitting up.. that never happens. I brushed it off as "he was getting too much". So we decided to make a family trip to the mall, a mall about 45 minutes away, because it had all the good stores. And off we went.

They have awesome family bathrooms & nursing rooms at this mall. So naturally I parked my stroller in the huge family bathroom for my baby to sit while I peed, and my husband browsed the apple store (his other love).

I did my business & we made our way back to daddy. We then browsed some more. At one point Josh decided to go grab a drink and left me & the "sleeping" baby in a clothing store.. which is frustrating enough 4 weeks after you have a baby. But as soon as Josh left he decided to start screaming, naturally I wanted to calm him so I went to take him out of his stroller, and realized he had had a massive blow out in his carseat. So I texted Josh and we made our way back upstairs to the family/nursing rooms.

We cleaned him & the seat up and I thought "might as well feed him". So we sat in there contently on the couch nursing the babe. He burped, and seemed happy. So we decided to browse a bit more. He didn't seem to mind.

We left the mall shortly after with dinner in mind, but first we stopped at the baby store for some necessities. He slept the whole time.

We decided to drive a little closer to home to get dinner, and chose panera bread. I was really excited about chicken caesar salad. He continued to sleep contently while we ordered, sat down and started to eat.

I posted this pictures to face book saying "what a good boy while mama & dada eat dinner". Not 1 minute later he started to cough.. I thought nothing of it. Until he started to spit up.. and sound like he was struggling. Josh and I hurriedly grabbed him up and I began to burp him. The next hour seems like a blur to me, but I remember him jerking his head back and struggling to breath, taking sharp short breaths only every once and a while. I told Josh to call 911. 45 seconds later (i'm not kidding) we were in an ambulance on our way to the hospital.

When we arrived they did tests on Lyric, and decided they were going to admit us because he would stop breathing for about 9 seconds and was struggling to take breaths. That went on for about an hour. They put an IV in my poor guy, which nearly brought his papa & daddy to tears. But I had to stay strong for my little boy.

They decided that at the hospital where we were they didn't have the tools necessary to monitor his breathing and do the tests they needed to do to make sure he was okay. So they decided to transfer him & me by ambulance to another hospital about 45 minutes away. They had a room waiting for us, and the staff had all been informed of our situation. We waited for the ambulance to get there, and him & I were the only ones allowed to ride there. The rest of our family & Josh would have to follow us. We all said our goodbyes and I helped the EMT's strap my baby in his carseat and hook him up to their monitors. While we were loading his carseat onto the stretcher to walk out to the ambulance Lyric's heart rate started to drop, this would have been normal had he been sleeping.. but he was wide awake and his heart rate was dipping below 100, it was in the 80's & 70's.. at 60 they start CPR. So our "transfer case" became an "emergency case" and Lyric was ran out of the ER onto the ambulance.

We got settled in & they turned on the lights and sirens to make it there as fast as we could. A few times Lyric wasn't breathing normally and the EMT literally had to shake him to get him to breathe. Talk about scary.

We got to the hospital in about 20 minutes, where we were immediately brought to a room & checked in. The nurse was waiting for us. She did all the necessary stats & then went over things while I nursed him. She said that in the morning (ha, it was 5:30am) that he would have 3 tests done and we would know what was wrong with our baby boy before we left the hospital.

My parents & brother stayed with us for a while, but decided to leave after a while. So Josh and I were there with Lyric. At around 10am they brought a wheelchair to transport us to our first test. An upper GI x-ray.

Lyric and I went into the room while Josh waited outside (only one parent was allowed back). The nurse explained everything that would go on, and then the Dr. came in. We laid Lyric down, and I was handed a bottle of contrast to feed him. I was told when to feed him & when to stop. The Dr. took pictures throughout the whole process, while the nurse turned Lyric from side to side, onto his belly & back onto his back.

At the end the Dr told me to look at the series of x-rays. The first one showed his stomach, normal. Then the next one the contrast started to show up in his stomach. And when I had finished feeding him the contrast begin to show coming back up into his esophagus. My baby was diagnosed on the spot with reflux.

After a while we were brought back to our room, where the other Dr. came in and told us how we should go forward. He would be on medicine, Zantac, for the reflux & we had to burp him more frequently & hold him upright for half an hour after his feedings. They canceled all the other tests for seizures & apnea. I was so relieved of this diagnosis rather than something with his heart. After getting a prescription & discharge paperwork we were on our way! And so happy that our baby boy is healthy & happy!!!!

Thank you to everyone on instagram & Facebook that prayed for my little boy & shared kind words and encouragement. We really needed & appreciated it more than we can express.

Lyric is doing so much better on the medicine, he seems to be more satisfied when eating, and sleeps better overall. We are so thankful to have an answer to our scare, and a safe healthy baby.
